Learn How To: Greek Border
Tools: Newspaper, roller handle, roller cover, 2" tape, drop cloth
Basecoat: Semi-gloss interior latex
Glaze: Tinted to color of your choice
Number of People: Two
Preparing To Paint: Use 2" tape to tape of ceiling and trim. Protect floor with a drop cloth. Tear newspaper sheets into four equal sections.
Tips: This technique is largely accomplished through the placement of tape. For speed and ease 2" tape roll can be used in place of a ruler. Pay close attention to tape detail and all measurements.
Step 1: Layout first two pieces of tape to run directly against side walls and ceiling. Thus creating a border.
Step 2: Then using the roll of 2" tape as a ruler, draw three registration marks horizontally and vertically. These marks will be used when applying future pieces of tape, as you see in the next step.
Step 3: Off of the third horizontal mark run a piece of tape vertically over lapping the mark by at least two inches. Peel back tape to reveal the third mark and then using a tool with a straight edge (5 in one, scraper tool or trowel) apply pressure down on the tape and rip off a straight line. The tape should now end exactly at your third mark.
Step 4: Off of the third vertical mark run a piece of tape horizontally over lapping the mark by at least two inches. Peel back tape to reveal the third mark and then using a tool with a straight edge (5 in one, scraper tool or trowel) apply pressure down on the tape and rip off a straight line. The tape should now end exactly at your third mark.
Step 5: You should now be left with an opened box like shape. All additional marks from now on with work off of this initial box..
Step 6: Using the tape again and a pencil you will create three registration marks off the top of the design. The first one will be off of the vertical piece of tape that is coming down from the horizontal piece of tape that you are using as a border(see step one). The next registration mark will be off of the horizontal piece of tape that you are using as a border. The third mark will be again off of the horizontal piece of border tape but moved over about one foot.
Step 7: Now you need to run a piece of tape vertically across your area using your registration marks, being sure you overlap your vertical mark by at least two inches.
Step 8: Peel back tape to reveal the vertical mark and then using a tool with a straight edge (5 in one, scraper tool or trowel) apply pressure down on the tape and rip off a straight line. The tape should now end exactly at your vertical mark. (Repeat these steps for the horizontal side of the design.)
Step 9: Now apply two pieces of tape vertically and horizontally off your inner end pieces of tape. Make sure these two pieces overlap as seen in picture 9.
Step 10: Run a piece of tape vertically in alignment with your vertical piece of tape from step 5. Using your tool again be sure to chop off excess tape in alignment with your horizontal piece of tape from step 5.
Step 11: Now run a piece of tape horizontally in alignment with your horizontal piece of tape from step 5. Using your tool again chop off excess tape in alignment with your vertical piece of tape from step 5.
Step 12: Peel back tape to reveal the corner of the tape applied in steps 10 and 11. Then using your tool with a straight edge apply pressure down on the tape and rip off a straight line. The tape should now end creating an exact corner. (Repeat these steps for the other side of the design.)
Step 13: You should now be left with a staircase design of tape.
Step 14: For the inner square of the design, rip off a piece of tape 4" long or bigger. Using the original set of registration marks you should be able to apply your piece of tape for the square.
Step 15: Peel back tape to reveal the vertical mark and then using a tool with a straight edge (5 in one, scraper tool or trowel) apply pressure down on the tape and rip off a straight line on both sides. The tape should now end exactly at your vertical marks on either side creating a perfect square.
Step 16: 16. Repeat these steps for each corner of the room. When completed it is time to paint!
Step 17: 17. Using a roller and you glaze, roll a three by five section of glaze onto the wall.
Step 18: Be sure that when rolling you glaze on the wall that there is a nice even coat.
Step 19: Lay a piece of newspaper on wet glaze, starting in top corner. Lightly rub the newspaper once with your hand and then pull the paper off wall. Move the paper over to a new section of glaze and repeat. Use the same sheet of paper four to five times, or until it does not remove glaze from the wall. At this point, discard and use a new sheet of newspaper.
Step 20: Continue this technique in 3X5 sections over the entire wall. Be sure to move quickly in a steady motion as to not create dry lines from the glaze.
Step 21: 21. While the glaze is still wet remove tape from the entire surface. If any glaze snuck under your tape you can just wipe it with your finger since the glaze is still wet.
Step 22: You now have a completed border. Although this seems to be a complicated technique, it is not. Once you do this a couple of times it is done with ease.
