Slate Mist Plaster with gold raised border

2009-12-27

Plaster used:    Decorative Plaster - White tinted to Pratt and Lambert 24-21.
Pigment used:  White
Step 1: Fill holes and prepare room by taping off ceiling, doors and trim.

Step 2: Using a flat paint tinted P&L 24-21 mix one teaspoon of sand and shake well. Roll out entire room and let dry. This will add grit for your plaster to adhere to.
Step 3: Using a spatula or trowel, apply thin coats in a multi-directional patch-work over the surface; imagine yourself creating peaks and then valleys. ( When two people are working, one creates the peaks and the other will fill in the valleys.) This makes an even pattern of cross-hatching. Continue until all of the desired area is covered. Let Dry.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 to completion. You are building layers. Let Dry.
Step 5: Using white Pigment, diluted in water about 3 tablespoons to a quart, rub in with sponge or brush until desired shade is attained. Allow to dry. The wash is not permanent at this point and can be diluted with a wet sponge if color is determined to be too dark.
Step 6: To protect the look and keep the illusion of stone we suggest the use of a satin varnish or wax - Flat. This can be applied with a regular household sponge. One suggestion is to use a short pile or whizz roller when applying the varnish.
Step 7: Using CE's Scroll border or border of your desire apply Metallic Wax - Gold over stencil with sponge, continue the border stencil repeat around the entire room. Let Dry.
*For a stencil variation, try using a single stencil with white decorative plaster. Placement of this smaller stencil should be strategically staggered throughout the wall space. Apply thin coats of plaster with spatula. Lift stencil and enjoy!
